But in all honesty I haven't seen a game yet on iOS that really blew me away, so as far as gaming goes I think getting a console is the better choice..
Well duh! Consoles aren't really handheld's rival. You expect that it will be the better gaming ability.
But handhelds have their purpose too. Entertainment where you can't carry a tv and console around. On airplanes, going on vacation where it's just not practical to lug a whole console around (especially considering airlines are tightening allowances for luggage), when you're waiting for something somewhere away from your home (like at a doctor's office).
Consoles shouldn't even be discussed in this discussion. That is like comparing apples and oranges, they really have no bearing in this at all.

On the topic of photo storage and editing, I ran across this blog post in an app on my iPad called Photoverse. It details how to use star ratings to thin out a shoot without dumping any photos.

Thanks for sharing this app Dale! I have a lot of research to do! :)
ok 100Teraflops I use a Mac Pro daily for Music and Photography, The Mac Pro is a good beastie but alone it cant do the job, it must be paired up to a good Monitor, IPS panel if possible, I did use apple's but found the Dell's re-produced colour better. When you purchase your DSLR will you shoot RAW or Jpeg, think about it, RAW may be bigger files, but you can keep producing a good quality image from just 1 RAW file, On the subject of a scratch disk try and dedicate a complete disk as scratch.
my MP is set up as follows,
bay 1 :500gb for OS & apps
bay 2 :320gb as Scratch Disk
bays 3 & 4 : both have 1tb hdd's in a raid 1 configuration for music and stuff
All my RAW files & Aperture library are on a WD my book studio 4TB edition in a raid 1 via fw800 giving me 2TB to use, The system is simple and it works well. the big hdd's are all green WD drives. Hdd's are cheap now, but get the biggest you can afford (don't buy at the apple store), I find using Raid 1 I spend less time now backing up. The hardest part of photography is deleting images, you may take 100 shots and find only 2 of them are keepers, but getting rid of blurry, out of focus files will free up a lot of space,
you have had some excellent advice on here so far, and it will be nice to hear how you finally set up your workflow, keep us posted :)
Thanks for recommending the specs of a quality monitor. Your Mac Pro HDD configuration is simple and easy to understand. Are you using striping from OS X or did you set you RAID 1 with only two drives? I agree that it is very hard deleting photos, as I do not delete photos after I take them. I wait a few days or longer, and then decide if they are keepers. However, I take photos of my family etc and occasionally automobiles and landscape. Also, you are right that I have received excellent advice from the forum members. You folks rule! :)
I will keep you all posted. I am thinking that I should buy a Mac Pro soon! From what I have read on this forum, a new Mac Pro is not expected until 4Q 2011 or 2012. :eek: I do not want to wait that long for a stupid processor chipset. :D A few months is optimal, but 6-8 is not feasible. Thanks again for sharing knowledge and swapping ideas!

This really is what I wish music today sounded like. No frills or auto tune. Just pure raw music.

It saddens me to say it...but should I be abandoning the laser printer that I purchased only a year and a half ago. It's been sooooo long does either Apple or Epson ever plan to support my $400 paperweight?

Can't say that I'm surprised by this. Personally, I think Microsoft is just going through the motions when it comes to the music player business.

I was working the early shift at Sydney International Airport that day. On the shuttle bus to the airport the radio announcer said a plane had flown into a building in New York, we all laughed because we thought he must have gotten his information wrong.
When we arrived at the airport there on the screens was the event unfolding, much to our horror. I recall as the morning progressed the news was being broadcast on all the TV's around the terminal. Everyone was sitting around looking pasty faced and flights were systematically being cancelled. No-one (workers or passengers) were speaking, it was surreal. However all the oriental passengers were buzzing around, shopping, eating and joking. For them it was an opportunity to shop unimpeded. It was like they didn't see the screens around them. Occasionally they'd look up and then would go on with what they were doing.

Individual files can only be 4 gig in size. The partition itself can be much larger
So, does this mean that I can transfer files that are 4GB or less at once into the FAT32? Assuming as an example I have a 20GB video, I wont be able to transfer it into the FAT32, right?
And also, I wanna ask: does it mean that while in Windows 7, i put my files into the FAT32, and then boot into OS X and retrieve it from the FAT32? And this works vice versa, right?
One more thing, files on FAT32 can be read/written by both Windows 7 AND OS X?

it happened on my 13" MBP when using it with and HDTV with a HDMI-MiniDP adapter. when that happens i usually try shift control eject to put the display in 'sleep' and wake it back up without putting the machine to sleep and that helps too atleast in my situation. hopefully might be another alternative tip that works.

The only thing worse than crappy cell phone companies would be someone that thinks the government could make it better. What motivation does the govt. have to make cell phone companies better? Votes. That's it. Votes. The only motivation that government has. So they'll promise you that they'll make it better. You'll vote for them. They'll spend money regulating whatever you think needs regulating. They'll create a branch that costs some upzillion dollars. Cell phone companies will be forced to comply with some ridiculous something or other. They'll up your bill by placing a charge on it called the "rsoo tax" to pay for it. The cell phone companies will all still treat you badly. Vote with your feet. Keep switching carriers. Don't blow your cash on idiotic features for idiotic prices. The companies will comply and compete for your business.
The cell companies lobbied HARD to not allow you to keep your number when you switch. The state legislature here (Calif) buckled 3 times.
You can thank "the government" for allowing you to keep your number when you switch. You can also thank "the government" for demanding that the companies improve their 911 protocols. People were sometimes
waiting 20 minutes to get connected. Also, blame "the government"
for requiring that the companies allow you a grace period to return your phone. They actually had to create a bill called "the cell phone bill of rights"
These actions did not create a huge costly layer of bureaucracy. Why do people think that corporations should be allowed to abuse people unhindered? After-all the market was/is not providing that many real choices. It's a cartel.
Bye the way, "the government" (in theory) is you.

I scanned in class notes into a pdf file. I then arranged the PDFs in the order I wanted using Preview. Now I can't seem to save the whole thing as one big file, so I can view it on my ipad.
When I click File, the option it gives me is "save as" and will only save that one pdf slide to my desktop.
I need help, I just spent 5 hours doing all this, with well over 600 pages.
thanks in advance
While you have them open in Preview, select all (Cmd + A), and go to the File->Print Selected... or something like that. Click the PDF button in the lower left hand corner of the print dialog.

Much appreciation for the hard work, but I agree that this design is cluttered and disorganized. If nothing else, I believe a unified color scheme is crucial. Presently, the new front page is difficult to view.

In geography, actually. Which, just to sound weird, was where I was during the July 7th London attacks. And the failed London ones (can't remember the date)
But don't fear! I've dropped it this year, so the attacks should clear up...

I'll do it for $100 and meet you halfway in Draper.
If I had the $100 I'd do it Ben. I set aside this money from last year's tax return and it's the last bit of spare money I have. I shouldn't even be buying one... but seriously, my wife has been to hell and back for me and literally saved my life so I am going to get her something very nice.
If I had the $100 I'd do it in a heartbeat because she deserves it and I'd be happy to give somebody some extra cash for doing a solid for me at this time. I just can't afford it. Thanks for the offer though. It's much appreciated!

i have a really small iogear 4 port USB 2.0 hub. it's white, not more than 4-5 inches and about 3/4" thick. it looks like this: http://www.mobileplanet.com/us/product.asp?code=120112&partner=IMFRO, but it's white. i used it once or twice because i didnt have enough room to plug in my ipod, but i dont use it too much anymore, i just switch between one of the ports on my pb. i think i paid like $29.99 or something, but i'll give it to you for like $15?

I could be wrong here, but I believe for selector to work you have to at least declare an incoming object:
- (void)pumpdoubletap:(id) sender {
progbm.progress -=0.1;
}
- (void)pumpdoubletap:(id) sender {
progbm.progress -=0.1;

i was (a student) living at union square in nyc (~1.5 miles north of the towers). i strolled out of bed at probably 10 am or so. did my morning email check... a friend who didn't email me often had written "i see bad things happening in nyc... are you ok?" i thought he meant in general bad things like gangs and whatnot... it didn't click. i forget what caused me to put on the tv, but eventually i did and i was in shock. emails back and forth to family discussing the events and various news reports that came out ("bomb" in pentagon, etc)...
my roommate returned a bit later, having walked down the street to school earlier in the morning, seeing the towers as usual. and then on the way back, they were gone.
classes were cancelled for a week.
my then girlfriend's dad and brother worked in the general area, and both were not heard from until after 1 pm... it was scary. they both made it up to my girlfriend's dorm by foot (2 miles or so).
later that day my roommate and i went down to around canal st. which was as far as they'd let us walk. and took pictures of dust covered cars, ambulances filled with people, etc. nothing super dramatic (they didn't let us get close at all), but still.. just unreal.
the next day, the wind changed and started blowing north.... our lungs were filled with the smoke as our windows were opened, unprepared. to this day, i feel i have developed allergies (never had them prior) as a result of the pollution in nyc after the attack. and of course, the city declared it clean in relatively little time, killing and disabling rescue workers and others who were ill prepared to deal with it. sad
reading all these experiences one thing keeps coming up (and came up in news stories a ton of course) and that is the people who stayed home that day, or got in late that day, etc etc who were nearly there, and nearly possibly killed... and it makes me wonder if anyone else has considered how amazing it is (in a scary way) that the death toll was *only* ~3000 when on any given day more like 100,000 people are in the two towers....
