lol 1 last question is is it 1 cable or do i have to buy the adapter? i looked online for just one cable but i keep getting the adapter instead of 1 cord. but my guess is that you have a regular optical cord then plug the 1 end into the adapter? :S

I am having a devil of a time getting deinterlaced output from FCE 4. I definitely want DI movie files because the delivery target is always going to be a computer, never a TV.
My source clips are 1080 60i, from a Sony camera. I can import them into FCE OK and arrange them on a timeline.
I have tried turning on deinterlacing every single place I see it, but playing the exported mov always shows really ugly interlacing artifacts.
Attempt 1: I have tried adding the DI filter to each clip in the Browser, rendering, and exporting the sequence as a self contained quicktime movie. No luck. But if I export the clip to a mov (by right-clicking it in the Browser and choosing Export/Quicktime Movie) THAT mov looks fine and clearly has deinterlacing applied.
Attempt 2: I have tried exporting the project "Using Quicktime Conversion" and turning on the DI checkbox in the Size options... No luck.
There is surely SOMETHING I am doing wrong but I can't figure it out.
I looked in to the JES deinterlacer but it won't work on MTS files, plus FCE won't even let you import MTS files from the desktop... they have to be right out of the camera, which seems daffy to me.
I would be super appreciative of any tips. This is the second to last problem I need to solve to make this video camera useful. (The next will be figuring out how to get my deinterlaced mov files to Vimeo, which demands mp4 I think.)
I am finding the world of video editing to be about a million times more complex and frustrating than I expected. I'm going back to still photography. ;)

Ridiculous. I got there at 6:15 and the Apple blue shirt at the end of the line told me they had cut off sales.
Does anybody know a store that still has them as of Saturday night in the southern california area?
I know, this is no problem compared to the poor folks in Japan but I just want to get an iPad.

For a new Mac owner, it's nothing to worry about. It's not completely normal, but you shouldn't worry about playing with your new iMac.
However, if this continues on, it may not be healthy for you nor your iMac. If you find yourself staying home from work next week just to play with your iMac and Expose, then you've got problems. In that case, I recommend going to AA (if you're in the US) to try to let go, and just use it as a computer. Cold turkey is definitely not the answer, especially with your Mac. Instead, just ease up on the use, and use those functions like Expose when you need them.
Which should just be about every day of your life. ;) :D

I think Apple's financial results would have been better if they had more iPad 2's to sell.
Unfortunately, we could see a worse-off quarter for Apple the next time because the effects of the parts shortages from Japan may start affecting the bottom line, despite what Apple claims currently.

Can anyone give an estimate, based off of previous releases, as to how long it'll take for a public release? I can't be the only one itching to jailbreak my iPad2.
I'm no expert, but it's a user land exploit which is in the firmware itself. Jailbreaks on other iDevices are hardware which means Jailbreakable for life.
It's most likely going to be at jailbreakme.com, which is a .PDF used to exploit. So I guess a few days at most. It's not going to be a program like Redsn0w or pwnagetool.
So it should be pretty quick.
I don't understand why everyone is getting so mad. It got moved, chill out.

or how about virtualapple.org (http://www.virtualapple.org/) which lets you do the same thing (almost) in a browser window...
Thanks for this. What a great site! I love their collection of old manuals.

Does that mean that VirtualPC is now abandonware and can be distributed freely?
Doubt it. This is Microsoft remember. Also, I think it is still going to get sold for PPC, it's just they no longer plan a Intel/Universal build of it.
Give it up to when it is no longer available to buy for PPC then it becomes abandonware I believe.

whats new??? so apple isnt telling us exactly what is in our machines. last time i checked apple didt tell us that the DVD burners in our systems are capable of doing DVD-RW. why would they tell us that they are using a different manufacturer??? and, oh no!!! more formats!!! they better not tell us and add to the value of buying a mac

i had the choice but opted for a 4G 30GB instead. i had a 3G 10GB that had been full for most of the time i had it (had it for just over a year).I thought the 20GB'd be too small but didn't want to fill the cavern of the 60GB--figured that by the time i filled it with music i'd actually wanna listen to (instead of just all my cd's--even ones that i haven't listened to since I bought 'em), i'd be ready to upgrade/move on to something else. so I bought the 30GB on sale from the apple store online-- reminds me: i need to send in my rebate form...
the 60 would be good to backup files on your computer, but for music only it was too big for me.

All I really need is the ability to tag a photo using Google Maps/Earth. It would be nice to have it tagged when I take it, but if I'm able to use an integrated iphoto/google maps to tag photos, and then be able to integrate the photos into google maps/earth, that's good enough for me.

The Microsoft phone will follow this death shortly. They really just need to abandon the hardware endeavor completely and use those resources to create a solid and stable operating system. Funny how Microsoft side barred into all of these other areas, yet their main source of revenue, Windows, is still a steamy pile.
Uh, Microsoft doesn't make any phones. They already do exactly what you described - make a great phone OS for other manufacturers to use. HTC, Samsung, LG have released phones using it so far and Nokia are planning new devices using it soon.

You don't need it you are correct. I'd need to do a comparison to really find out what the difference is. From what I've been able to find out it seems the active DI is best for instruments w/ active pickups like some basses & acoustic guitars. The guys from Radial say their units allow for a wider dynamic range if I understood that right....whereas some cheaper passive units clip off some portions of a hot signal. The J48 is both passive & active (via phantom power). I'm still trying to sort all this out.

I agree that you should delete the preferences first, but this problem it is also a sing that you have a damaged true type font on your system.
The hard part is to find it and remove it from your system, that should fix your indesign.
Illustrator does the same when a font is damaged.
Good luck
:)

... I stopped using CDs and DVDs a few years back. Hard drives are just too inexpensive now and it was just too much of a hassle for me to burn sets of photos, store, and keep up with individual discs. With my job I move frequently and it's just another thing to loose. I opted for the simplicity of Time Machine (or similar program) and redundant backups and I'm happy with it. The simplicity and automation really make sure I actually do the backups which is the most important part ;).
I stopped saving non-keepers a few years ago too and it cut down on my workflow a lot. There's nothing wrong with saving everything but I found that I was wasting a lot of time dealing with them and trying to save borderline images. The first thing I do know is go through several culling sessions when I download the camera and cut out everything that's not a "keeper" for me. I delete them and forget them. I find I'm not spending a lot of time on borderline shots and I'm only spending time in post processing on what I thought were the few best shots of the bunch. I do tend to keep more family pictures though because they are more about recording the moment. Hope all this helps.
I can understand how burning a lot of photos would become tedious! Well I learned that backing up one's HDD is just as important as being a good photographer. :) Ironically, I deleted a few photos tonight. They were horrible photos, very blurry and I could not make out what I was taking a picture of. I do not know why I kept them this long!
Utilizing technology is a good thing, but sometimes technology is cumbersome. I will backup to blank media until I get sick of doing it. Sir, thanks for your contribution to my thread. You folks over here are good people, as I do not care what the video editing people think. ;) This thread is like a good women: a keeper! :D

I think people are forgetting one very nice thing about res independent UI's. Sure you can scale them up for huge monitors but you can also scale them down for smaller monitors (12" PB for instance). Try it with your browser text. Scale it down all the way (Command+Shift+minus in Safari) in the browser and you can see a heck of a lot more and it still looks good. Sure you'll still be using the same pixel density but it is possible to give you more space to work with by scaling down the OS size. This is very exciting for a 12" PB user.
