Last December, we reported (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/12/08/handheld-gamers-moving-from-dedicated-devices-to-smartphones/) on survey results showing that users of portable games are increasingly defecting from dedicated devices such as the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP to smartphones such as the iPhone.

    Thanks, you've really helped out.

One question that does come across though is once I flash the card with EFI and select the SSD as a boot drive from an existing OSX install I will want to install Mac OSX fresh on this now bootable SSD and ditch the default OSX installation on which I chose the SSD as the boot drive. Can I do this? Or must I clone the existing OSX install onto the new SSD drive first?

I was thinking after making the SSD boot drive I could simply boot off the OSX install discs and install OSX on this SSD?
You can do it either way.

Cloning is easier (already has both the OS and card drivers installed), but if you want a clean installation, you use the install disks, then the disk that came with the RAID card (card settings are on the card).

Another alternative, is start clean on the existing OS disk, then clone (this would should be more "fool proof" than trying to use the DVD installation disks directly to the SSD, as you could potentially run into an issue setting the SSD as the boot location if that's not already set (which makes a change in the system's firmware).

It's going to be a new system with no important data, so I don't care about cloning the existing OSX install which comes on the 1TB HDD with the 8-core 2010 Mac Pro. In fact I am going to pull that drive out altogether.
If the current installation isn't cluttered with things you no longer want/need (i.e. just the OS and RAID card drivers), creating a clone would be the fastest and easiest way to go.

If it is cluttered with crap you no longer want (reason for a clean OS X installation), see above.

Perhaps I am complicating things too much here and after flashing the card to EFI, I can just shut down, take out the original 1TB HDD with OSX. Start the PC, launch the Areca EFI RAID BIOS menu with the right key press, put the 2x SSD's in pass through mode and 4x 3TB in RAID5. Afterwards just boot off the OSX cd and it will see the 2x SSD drives and the RAID5 volume and just install OSX on one of the SSD's like I want? Will I have troubles installing Win 7 through bootcamp on the 2nd SSD drive when its running off the Areca in pass through mode ?[/QUOTE]
Put the Windows disk on the ICH (system's SATA ports), as the card cannot dual boot like that in a MP (been tried before and has never worked).

Other than the Windows disk, it will work.

Also maybe you know, for installing 2x 6G SSD's in the 2nd 5'25" optical bay I obviously need either the OWC multimount adapter bracket 2.5 to 5.25 or other, but for power do I need a SATA power Y splitter or something to get power to both SSD's ? Both of these will be connected to the Areca in pass through mode, the length of the included miniSAS cable should be fine to reach to the SSD's in the optical bay right ?
Well, since one of these needs to be connected to the DATA portion of the backplane cable and you need to split the power off for the OS X SSD (presume this is to be both the OS X and Windows disk locations, as it's the most logical), then do the following:

How to make a cable that retains both the DATA and splits power to multiple drives in the empty ODD bay.
    Cables to buy:

This may turn out to be for Apple the greatest cost of its transition from PowerPC to Intel.
But for every person who runs the hacked version indefinitely, they'll be someone else who grows tired of the pirated OSX not giving the complete widget and buys a Mac.

Maybe it's already happened. Apple could already have 12.2% market share and not know it :p

Is there a reason why he would not have a DropBox account? I mean, DropBox is great and very useful, why couldn't he be using it?

He could, but what that would say about his belief iDisk/MobileMe..... would be interesting.

i don't have a car, so i'm slightly limited in my options. 6am is what seems reasonable to me (i have absolutely no desire to camp out over night). I'll risk the later start and if it means I have to wait a few days because I wasn't up early enough. So be it.

I may be a fan, but I am not a fanatic.

A great place to grab Jag for cheap is OWC, or eBay.

Jag never shipped on DVD-ROMs, unless they are the system restore discs, and even then I believe it was CDs.

The Wallstreets are a nice machine if you have enough RAM and a big HD in them. And if the person who sold you one didnt really screw you over by selling you a dying machine. -.-

    I like this.

    No more fines. :)

Hope it makes it to the UK soon after.

Users of Amazon's Kindle e-reader will soon be able to borrow electronic books from libraries in the US.

The retailer is teaming up with Overdrive, which already offers an e-book lending service through 11,000 American libraries.

Until now Kindle owners have been unable to download titles because the device uses a unique file format.

Overdrive also operates in the UK, however Amazon would not confirm if its plans include Britain.

It said the US system would launch later in the year.

Borrowed books will be available on Amazon's own Kindle reader as well as other devices running the Kindle software, including iPads and Android tablets.

Anyone wanting to borrow a publication must be a member of their local library.

Titles are downloaded through the library's website and are automatically removed after a set number of days, with a maximum loan time of three weeks.

Having Apache running on your computer, and the appropriate ports open on your firewall does theoretically make your computer more vulnerable, but in reality it's definitely not a "sure fire way to get hacked". As long as you take appropriate security measures, like having your firewall set up correctly and turning off things such as Server Signature your chances of getting hacked are quite slim. Apache is what powers a large portion of websites across the world, and if it in itself was that vulnerable websites would go down a lot.

Having a dynamic IP will greatly decrease your chances of getting hacked, as well, because it will change each time your modem gets reset, making your virtually un-findable for any would-be hackers. (Unless you use some sort of DynDNS service that is).

I agree with some parts of what you stated. For starters, if you use Apple's supplied version of Apache (I'm not sure what they currently ship), then you are stuck with that version until they supply any patches for it.

As for ServerSignature, that's fairly useless, as that's considered security by obscurity. You can hide the server you are running, but there are still ways to figure out what server you have.

Also, having a dynamic IP may prevent an individual hacker, but does nothing for bots and worms. Most of the major worms scan entire subnets, so merely having an open port increases your vulnerability.

Did you miss this from the article???

"The 3G network will be complemented by UMA, which lets phone calls transition between cellular and Wi-Fi to enhance indoor coverage. But we'll only see "market trials" of UMA this year, according to Dotson"

Last time I heard 'Market Trial' was ITMS on a Mac.......

Ah! Ram Doubler and Speed Doubler - those were great - worked too!
    I remember those days.
Therewas also a piece of software to emulate a floating point processor for those machines that didn't have one.

Remember shoe-horning into my SE a video card so I could attach a 21" monitor - yay RasterOps!

And don't forget about my favorite program from them.....The Playstation Emulator that worked almost 100% perfectly...but does not run on OSX or Classic, had to run in OS9 proper. I loved that program......sigh....

Aquisition for Mac OS X is also a very stable, very efficient and easy to use P2P program. I use it to preview songs before I actually buy them on iTMS... ;) Good luck!
